Tokens

Tokens (sometimes referred to as Spirit Tokens) are used by Powers and Spirits from expansions to represent perils and hazards which hinder the Invaders. Unlike most Power effects, which only last until the end of the turn, Tokens stay on the island and continue to affect the Invaders until they are removed. Beasts, Wilds, Disease, and Badlands tokens are added to lands; Strife is added to specific Invaders. There is no limit to how many tokens can be in a land, or to how many Strife tokens can be on an Invader. Beasts, Wilds, Disease, and Strife was added in the Branch & Claw expansion while Badlands was added in Jagged Earth. =Badlands (JE)=

=Treating One Piece as Another (JE)= A few effects say something like, “Beast also count as Badlands”. So long as this effect is active, in this example, each Beasts token in the affected area is also treated as a Badlands.

Note that in this example, an effect like “1 Fear per Beast/Badlands” on a land with 1 Beasts would still only do 1 Fear – it means “1 Fear per piece that is Beast or Badlands”, and a piece that’s both of those things is still only 1 piece.

If the effect is optional, you may decide both per Action and per piece – so if you had “your Presence may also count as Beast”, you could treat 2 of your Presence as Beasts for a Power Card, then none of them as Beasts for a later Event. With Fear and Event Cards, you get to see the card’s text before making the decisions.
